Amsterdam canal houses

The Netherlands

A European city at a comfortable scale — canals, narrow houses, serious museums, and nearly everything within walking distance.

Language
Dutch, with English very widely spoken
Currency
Euro (EUR)
Best time to visit
April – June, and September
Flight time
About 6 hours from Riyadh

Amsterdam is a walking city rather than a driving one. The canals divide it into small neighbourhoods, each with its own character, and the distances between them are short.

Its museums are among the best in Europe, and the cafés along the water are part of ordinary daily life. Add a canal boat at dusk.

It stands on its own for four or five days, or works as the opening stop in a wider European programme — the rail connections make onward travel straightforward.

01

The canals by boat

The clearest way to understand how the city is laid out. Best just before dusk, as the bridges light up.

Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum

Two museums side by side on Museumplein. Book ahead to skip the queue.

03

The Jordaan

The calmest of the central neighbourhoods — narrow lanes, small shops and canal-side cafés.

The tulip fields

A day trip out of the city. The season is short — roughly late March to mid-May.

Dam Square

The centre of the city, and the Royal Palace.

Anne Frank House

Requires booking well in advance.

Albert Cuyp Market

The city's largest daily street market.

Vondelpark

The city's green space, and easy with family.
