Istanbul is one of the few destinations that satisfies a whole group at once — history for one traveller, markets for another, the strait for anyone who wants quiet, and Turkish cooking for everybody.

The European side holds the landmarks: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the covered bazaar. The Asian side is calmer and closer to how the city actually lives, and deserves a full day of its own.

Its best quality is that it is walkable. Most of Sultanahmet sits within a short walk, and the tram or a Bosphorus ferry covers the rest.
